Greetings meine Freunde,
Today is results day! While most people would be celebrating Christmas round the corner, I hope that you (dear reader), received good news from the SMS service when you woke up. If yes, congratulations! If not, well, pick yourself up and live to fight another day. This is also the season where this humble blog receives more viewership. haha.
I'll probably split this post up to talk further about the final exams and overall thoughts about the modules as well.
In summary, my results were quite surprising. I did better than expected for most of the modules, save for microecons.
Fin3118 - A+
Bsp4513 - A-
Lag2201 - A-
Ec2101 - B+
Well, since I still have 2x S/Us... I'll be using one this semester and saving the last one for the final sem.
Now. On to the specifics.
Risk Management: A+ was definitely a pleasant surprise (duh). The final paper, unlike the mid terms, was filled more with open ended questions than calculations. If I recall correctly, it was a 60% qualitative and 40% quantitative split. Prof graded the open ended mid term questions rather leniently, as long as you hit the magic key words (or some semblance of it) he would give you the mark. I imagine the same trend continued for the finals and hence allowing me to score well. I seem to do better when qualitative answers are required, as opposed to a paper filled completely with math problems.
Prof did mention this was the first time he was conducting the course here in NUS, so there is likely to be changes should he continue to conduct this in future batches. For one, he acknowledged the mid terms were too easy (a direct result of giving easy questions adapted from the textbook). I would expect it to have more qualitative questions in the future, perhaps following closer to the finals style.
Having some background knowledge of options and derivatives will help in this particular course because some of the topics need that understanding. It's not a deal-breaker but I would recommend having it. (I did options and derivatives on exchange, so it helped in some understanding)
Alright. I am tired. Will continue writing some other day.
Cheers!

Hi RRR,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review on Fin3118. An A+ is indeed very impressive. I salute you!
I plan to take it this sem and aim for an A. They change the lecturer & textbook, but the content outline and CA breakdown remain the same: 60% for two tests, 20% for project report and 20% for project presentation.
It would be great if you could share with me your project experience. How much does it contribute to your A+?
I have lots of apprehensions about group project, having experienced terrible teamwork in the past. I am willing to work really hard and believe that I can score well for the 60% tests. But I am afraid that having ppl that do not really care anymore (being in Year 3) might pull down the 40% group component. I would really appreciate any insights you have on this matter.
Thank you for your time!
Best regards,

Hello! I took it with 1 friend and found another friend in the class, who had 2 friends to add. So it was a fortuitous group of 5 friends of friends. It definitely played a part...
ReplyDeleteHowever, one of my group mates got an A- at the end, so 2 grades worth went back to performance on the tests.
Year 3 I still see many people concerned about their grades, so I don't think you'll find too many of such people. I took mine in Y4S1, but I think we generally still were conscientious. Still, choose your team mates wisely (definitely helps if you know one or two people taking the same module)
Cheers!

Hi! I have been reading your blog for quite some time now and I love your module reviews. They are really detailed and helpful. I was wondering if you would be willing to share any materials (projects etc) that you might have for BSP4513 with me? Pls email me at a0130232@u.nus.edu :) Thank you so much and I truly appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteApologies, this reply is probably many months too late. I would rather you (dear reader) explore the modules on your own and not be hampered by any reference material going into the module. Be creative!! Notwithstanding, I would instead offer to give advice having completed (whichever) module.
