After the Mid terms

Greetings,

It is the end of week 10, my how time flies. I have gotten back all of my mid term papers, some doing better than others, overall decent grades to say the least.

For German 2... pretty standard test, I (again) didn't do too fantastic, scraping a 70+ on it. I think that puts me between the B+/A- range of grades. Listening compre is always a bummer. To do well one needs to spend time listening and getting used to hearing German being spoken. This unfortunately, cannot be done just two days before (like I did). The fact that we are having a relatively shorter syllabus really is good for me. Vocab tests, unlike in German 1, only test 1 chapter at a time. Last sem it was 2 chapters (which easily hits 200 odd words to learn). I did (finally) get full marks on the most recent test, to which I told my friends my life is complete.

Microecons... I did not too bad, probably somewhere in the top 25th percentile, so I am gunning for a A for the mod (that being said, you can get a subpar mid term grade and still get an A because the finals is 50%).

Fin3118... well, the mid term results saw a right tail heavy distribution. Calculations were very simple (I made some careless mistakes) and the prof was very generous with the qualitative answers. Highest score was 99/100 woot. I believe I got top 25th percentile, so I am also gunning for an A. I wouldn't expect a repeat for the finals, (or subsequent batches taking this mod either) the paper is probably going to be much tougher.

Econometrics (biz version)... I probably could have done better. The mid term was a 30 qn mcq, of which I only got a 24. Im pretty sure I am below the average mark (-sigh class of 15-) so I need to buck up for the finals.

Well, that's for the mid terms.

Cheers!
RRR

  1. Hi RRR!

Thanks for blogging your NUS Biz journey. I am NUS BBA year 3. I find your insights extremely helpful! May I ask if it is humanely possible to get A for FIN3118 Financial Risk Management?
I really want first class ( just for my self actualization purpose). My current Cap is 3.5, three more semesters to go..Yeah I know, quite a uphill battle...but I wish to try my best. Do you think it is feasible? Are you aiming for first class too?

    Thanks for reading:)

    1. Hi there! Let me answer your questions to the best of my ability and understanding.
Is it humanely possible to get A for FIN3118? (I loled at the question - not to demean but it really is funny) YES it is possible. I just uploaded some more thoughts on the module, if you find that it resonates with yourself, by all means go ahead.

Do I think it is feasible? (To get first class?) Mathematically, it sounds very very highly improbable. You'll have to calculate whether it is possible on your end. That being said, going for a second upper is respectable as well. Based on what I observe, doing a good penultimate year internship (for example, in a bank if that is your desired end point), plus a second upper would place you in a very good position come graduation.

Am I aiming for first class? Nah. I gave up at y3s2 haha. Had a B- for that sem which sort of messed everything up. If I could rewind the clocks back to year 1 and studied harder, perhaps first class would be a reality. But there really is little point thinking 'what if'.

End of the day grades aren't everything, some people are just more inclined to do well academically. Focus more on what you intend to do after uni. Start (now) because internship applications for next year summer is likely to close soon (or closed).

      Cheers, have a good holiday!

    2. Thanks for your prompt reply!
We are in the same bell curve for micro econs this sem haha. Dont mean to brag but I got A ( it's too late for me to switch major...econs and its quantitative stuff always resonates well with me)
I think I will try my hardest to pull up my CAP, by strategically choosing UEs and humanely possible fin mods.
I intend to take LAG1, but it seems tough and time-consuming to get A, doesn't it?
I will definitely take fin3118 next sem. I will follow your learning discipline - faithfully reading textbook every week:):)

Have a blast in the final year!

    3. erhmm..It is me again..I realized there was a typo on the CAP in my first comment..it is 4.35 instead. If it is 3.5, it is truly unsalvageable haha

    4. Oh! Haha. My cap was 4.33 at the end of Y3S1, so indeed it is close. My take was to chiong for Y3S2, if I managed to do well enough to bring up my cap substantially, say to 4.38-4.4, then I would attempt to go all the way. Unfortunately as it turned out, I had one of my worse sems and hence decided to give up that idea.
As for you, you can consider trying that as well, since you are in a slightly better position!

For both my LAG1 and 2, I got A-. I do feel that some people naturally just are able to grasp languages better haha, and hence get an A. I felt that I had put in quite a lot of effort for 1 (as compared to 2), unfortunately was not able to score an A. It really helps to have one or two people in class who are equally trying to do well and have some sort of adeptness at the language. That way you can bounce ideas off and improve yourself in the process as well.
