Y2S1: 3 weeks in

Greetings,

This semester has been pretty good for me so far. I have a free day (after spending one sem without, I feel so liberated) and am enjoying the modules so far.

No terrible textbook nonsense, no useless "conceptual" module. Finally we are really getting down to the nitty and gritty of why I came to business school.

1) Entrepreneurship MNO2009

One of the few good things about this module is that textbook is not compulsory (Yay!). Right now we are going through many concepts, much of which I am not reallllyy interested... but the group project should be interesting (albeit tiring). The prof is an Indian Indian, not the most entertaining of profs, but is sufficient to learn some stuff from.

2) Managerial Accounting ACC2002

It's a followup from FA, with the perspective from inside the firm. The module ties in a number of things learnt from OM as well. Relatively interesting, but would probably get tougher as the weeks progresses. The prof reminds me of Tao Okamoto, strangely enough. (She was the actress that played Mariko in Wolverine.) Shes from China, but studied in USA. Her English is pretty fluent, so there is no difficulty understanding her at all (much unlike my dear physics prof last sem).

3) Finance FIN2004

Another followup from FA, minus the accounting specific stuff. Very much relevant for a person intending to pursue work in banking, etc. My prof is a Yugoslavian (How cool is that!?), and the country doesnt even exist anymore. He is clearly very interested and passionate about what he teaches. Unfortunately though, I find his lessons rather draggy and can get kind of boring. It is a problem with his presentation methods, he likes to repeat things and it becomes monotonous sometimes.

4) Decision Science DSC2008

Ok I dont even know the name of the module. Maybe its Business Analytics. This module is supposed to be the ultimate CAP killer. Having gone through 4 weeks of lessons, I couldn't agree more!!!! He covers alot of things, generally revolving around how things can be solved using excel. My only (and biggest) qualm is I am unable to put everything taught into perspective, its just information rushing to me without any real structure. Without this "bird's eye view" I find learning very very difficult. The prof himself is fine, he manages to teach stuff pretty clearly, its just that I don't know whats relevant for finals and what isn't. (Kind of like the physics mod previous sem. Totally clueless until the final paper sat in front of me.)

5) General Biology LSM1301

I have no idea what caused me to take this module while I was planning. Anyways, this will become my breadth and if I don't do well, I can simply SU it. BUT, into the 4th lesson, I am honestly very glad I chose to take this module. I had no idea I had this much interest in biology. After sitting through and learning quite a wide range of topics, I find myself getting more and more interested. I think a large part of it ties along with things I like to do. For example, I workout a lot, hence the topic on Energy within the cell made me sit up and absorb all that was taught. Many things that are taught are so relevant to my understanding of myself and the way the world operates (on a micro scale). I suppose it is this practical relevance that interests me so much. Another topic I am looking forward to *refute* is that on evolution. Prof is a tall, skinny fellow, engaging makes nerdy jokes but it's still pretty funny. I sincerely hope I do well for this mod.

Ok that was a pre-mid term run down of this semester.

Signing off,
R3
